Most people choose a colour carefully and then accept whatever sheen they are offered. That is backwards. Sheen determines how washable a wall is, how much it hides or highlights imperfections, and how the colour actually reads in the room. Two walls in the identical colour at different sheens can look like different colours.
The basic trade-off
More sheen means more durability and washability, and also more reflected light, which means every dent, patch and roller mark shows. Less sheen hides imperfections beautifully and is much harder to clean. Everything else is a compromise between those two facts.
Flat and matte
Best on ceilings, and on walls in low-traffic rooms where hiding imperfections matters more than cleanability. A flat ceiling paint is genuinely the right answer almost every time, because a ceiling is a large uninterrupted plane under raking light and any sheen will show every minor irregularity. Modern matte wall paints are far more washable than flat paints used to be, which has made matte a reasonable choice for adult bedrooms and formal living rooms.
Eggshell
The workhorse for most living areas. Enough sheen to wipe down, little enough to be forgiving on walls that are not perfect. Living rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms and most hallways in a family home are well served by eggshell.
Satin
Step up in durability and the right choice where walls take contact and moisture. Kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, mudrooms, kids rooms and busy hallways. Satin cleans well and tolerates repeated wiping. The trade-off is that it will show wall imperfections more than eggshell, so the prep has to be better underneath it.
Semi-gloss and gloss
Trim, doors, cabinets and anything that gets touched constantly. Semi-gloss on baseboards and casings is standard for good reason: it wipes clean and it survives vacuum cleaners and shoes. It also creates the visual separation that makes trim read as trim against an eggshell wall. Full gloss is rare indoors outside of specific cabinet and furniture applications.
A practical rule for rentals
If you own rental property, go one step shinier than you would in your own home. The extra cleanability pays for itself at the first turnover, because a satin wall can be washed where a flat wall has to be repainted.
Sheen and colour interact
A deep colour at a high sheen reads considerably darker and more saturated than the same colour at a flat. If you are matching an existing wall, matching the sheen matters as much as matching the colour code. This is also why a spot repair on a satin wall almost always needs the full wall painted corner to corner.
