Painting for yourself and painting to sell are two different jobs. When you live in a house, the colour should be something you enjoy. When you are selling it, the colour needs to let a stranger imagine their own furniture in the room within about four seconds of walking through the door. Those goals rarely point at the same swatch.
Warm neutrals do the heavy lifting
The safest and most effective choice for most Central Arkansas homes is a warm neutral: a soft greige, a warm off-white, or a very light taupe. They photograph well, which matters enormously when most buyers see the listing photos before they see the house. They work with both warm and cool flooring. And critically, they do not fight with whatever furniture a buyer is mentally placing in the room.
Cool grays had a long run and they still work in contemporary builds, but in an older home with oak floors and warm trim a cool gray can read cold and slightly dated. Warm neutrals have aged better.
One colour through the main spaces
Running a single wall colour through the entry, living areas and hallways makes a house feel larger and more coherent. It is also cheaper to paint. Save any variation for bedrooms, and even there keep it quiet. A house with six different wall colours reads as a list of rooms to repaint, not as a home.
Where accent walls help and where they hurt
A single accent wall behind a fireplace or a bed can add depth. Four accent walls in four different rooms adds confusion. If you are unsure, skip it. Neutral and cohesive beats bold and divisive when the audience is every buyer who walks through the door.
Do not forget trim and ceilings
Freshly painted white trim against a clean neutral wall is one of the highest-return things you can do before listing. Tired, yellowed or chipped trim undercuts an otherwise good paint job immediately, and buyers notice it at close range even if they cannot articulate why a room feels unfinished. Ceilings matter too. A ceiling with an old water stain will draw the eye more than almost anything else in the room.
Test on your own walls, in your own light
Every colour looks different under the specific light in your house. A swatch that looks like a soft warm white in the store can read distinctly pink at four in the afternoon in a west-facing room. We put samples on the actual wall and let you look at them across a full day before anything gets ordered. It costs a little time and it prevents the much more expensive mistake.
